Introduction

This page provides basic information about the herb.

The oil that is extracted from the seeds (marketed as "starflower oil" or "borage oil") is a good source of gamma-linolenic acid

Borage is also rich in oleic and palmitic acid, conferring a hypocholesterolemic effect. This oil, which has recently been commercialised, may regulate metabolism and the hormonal system, and is considered by many naturopathic practitioners to be a good remedy for PMS and menopause symptoms such as the hot flush.

Borage is also sometimes indicated to alleviate and heal colds, bronchitis, and respiratory infections in general for its anti-inflammatory and balsamic properties. The flowers can be prepared in infusion to take advantage of its medicinal properties.

Starflower (borage) oil has been used to create this ultra high strength GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid) supplement. The body converts GLA (derived from an Omega 6 Fatty Acid) into hormone-like compounds called 'prostaglandins' which regulate a number of bodily functions; controlling inflammation in some cases and promoting it in others. It is particularly helpful for sufferers of PMS symptoms (such as cramps and breast tenderness) and skin conditions (such as eczema, acne and psoriasis). Each GLA Ultra capsule provides 100mg GLA, as well as 100% RDA of Vitamin E.

Starflower (borage) oil has been used therapeutically for hundreds of years and is derived from the seeds of the borage plant - a large plant with blue, star-shaped flowers found throughout Europe, North Africa and North America.
